This study was conducted to examine the relationships between metabolic syndrome and the pattern of left ventricular hypertrophy as well as the degree of left ventricular diastolic and systolic dysfunction in patients with asymptomatic aortic stenosis. For that purpose, baseline data of 272 patients from the ASTRONOMER (Aortic Stenosis Progression Observation Measuring Effects of Rosuvastatin) study were analyzed. The results revealed that metabolic syndrome was independently associated with a markedly higher prevalence of left ventricular concentric hypertrophy and with impaired myocardial diastolic and systolic functions in patients with calcific aortic stenosis. Therefore, it is suggested that the metabolic alterations linked to intra-abdominal (visceral) obesity and insulin resistance may be important determinants of left ventricular remodelling and function in patients with aortic stenosis.
