This paper examines the possible association between metabolic syndrome markers and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality among patients with established coronary artery disease. Although the investigators did not have the complete set of metabolic syndrome clinical criteria as defined by NCEP-ATP III or the IDF, they nevertheless found highly statistically significant associations between clinical diagnosis of the metabolic syndrome and incidence of recurrent cardiovascular morbidity and related mortality over a 4.2 year follow-up period. The authors concluded that clinical diagnosis of the metabolic syndrome is tied to adverse cardiovascular outcomes independent of diabetes and obesity among patients with established coronary disease. These findings stress the need to consider the metabolic syndrome, even among patients with established coronary disease.
