This meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the evidence of the association between dietary saturated fat and the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke and cardiovascular disease (CVD) by analyzing twenty-one well-designed prospective epidemiologic studies. The meta-analysis included 16 studies providing risk estimates for CHD and 8 studies providing data for stroke as an endpoint. The analysis revealed that intake of saturated fat was not associated with an increased risk of CHD, stroke, or CVD. The authors of this meta-analysis suggest that there is no strong evidence that dietary saturated fat is associated with an increased risk of CHD or CVD. In his comment, Jeremiah Stamler highly criticized the author’s scepticism on the well-known association between high intake of saturated fat and increased risk of CVD.
