Pre-diabetes and the risk for cardiovascular disease: a systematic review of the evidence.

J Am Coll Cardiol 2010;55:1310-7

Ford ES, Zhao G, Li C

Description

The aim of this meta-analysis was to estimate the magnitude of the relative risk (RR) for cardiovascular disease (CVD) associated with impaired fasting glucose (IFG) and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) from prospective observational studies published between 1997 and 2008. This review showed that the estimated RR for CVD associated with IGT ranged from 0.97 to 1.30 and for IFG it ranged from 1.12 to 1.37, depending on the set of studies included in a particular analysis. The authors reported that there was presently no evidence to suggest that the estimated RR for IGT is greater than that for IFG. Although IFG and IGT are associated with modest increases in the risk for CVD, the growing percentage of adults who have pre-diabetes in some countries could translate into substantial numbers of adults developing CVD. Thus, more studies to better understand the relationship between pre-diabetes and CVD are necessary.
