Description

This study was conducted to examine the association between the presence of the hypertriglyceridemic waist phenotype in early pregnancy and impaired glucose tolerance in later pregnancy. The study cohort included 144 French-Canadian white pregnant women. Results revealed that women with the hypertriglyceridemic waist phenotype (waist girth >85 cm and triglycerides ≥1.7 mmol/l) during the first trimester were characterized by a significantly increased risk of glucose intolerance later in pregnancy (odds ratio [OR]=6.1, p=0.002). The risk was slightly attenuated after adjustment for several confounding variables but remained significant with an OR of 4.7 (p=0.02). These results suggest that the hypertriglyceridemic waist phenotype could be an interesting screening tool to estimate the risk of gestational glucose intolerance.
