Metabolic aspects of valvular disease are discussed in this video where 2 experts in this area, Drs. Mathieu and Pibarot are interviewed by Dr. Després, the Scientific Director of the International Chair on Cardiometabolic Risk. Dr. Mathieu emphasizes the relatively high prevalence of calcific aortic valve disease in the population and especially among patients with the metabolic syndrome or type 2 diabetes. Then, Dr. Pibarot pursues the discussion by explaining that aortic valve stenosis is not a degenerative passive disease attributable to aging but rather an active process modulated by known/unknown factors. He also addresses the point that this disease shares some mechanisms which are similar to atherosclerosis. However, he points out that different mechanisms are also involved and poorly understood. For instance, research studies from these scientists are briefly reviewed and have revealed that some key features of the metabolic syndrome not only are associated with aortic valve stenosis but also with a faster progression rate of the disease. Finally, limits of statin therapy in patients with valvular diseases are also discussed.
