Impact of glucose intolerance and insulin resistance on cardiac structure and function: sex-related differences in the Framingham Heart Study.

Circulation 2003;107:448-54

Description

This paper describes the relation of insulin resistance and glucose tolerance to cardiac mass in subjects in the Framingham Study. Female gender is associated with increasing cardiac mass whereas there is no relationship between male gender and mass across increasing degrees of insulin resistance. This data may have implications for the relatively greater risk of cardiac dysfunction in obese, insulin-resistant women compared to men.
