The presence of diabetes in patients with heart failure is known to worsen prognosis. In the present study, the authors have attempted to control for a wide spectrum of covariates associated with the presence of diabetes in patients with heart failure. The investigators found that the “effect” of diabetes per se on the prognosis of patients with heart failure was worse in women than in men and that this sex-related difference was restricted to older patients with heart failure (above 65 years of age). Again, these results emphasize the hazards associated with diabetes in this specific subgroup of high risk patients.
