In this article, James addresses several topics regarding the obesity epidemic that is currently sweeping the globe. Issues surrounding the most recognized measure of obesity, body mass index, are discussed. The co-morbidities associated with the obesity epidemic, such as early determinants of insulin resistance and hypertension, are also reviewed. Special attention is also placed on the importance of physical activity as a means of increasing daily energy expenditure and on the resistance to weight loss or “slimming”. The article also includes an interesting discussion of the measures that are urgently required to counteract the obesity epidemic, such as food labelling; food marketing, nutritional quality, and pricing control; and the restriction of energy dense, highly palatable “fast” foods.
