Description

The impact of aerobic training, resistance training, or both types of exercise on glycemic control was evaluated in a sample of 251 type 2 diabetic patients who exercised 3 times/week for 6 months. Aerobic exercise reduced glycated hemoglobin concentrations by 0.51 percentage point (p=0.007) compared to controls. Resistance training had a similar effect (-0.38 percentage point; p=0.038). Subjects who did both forms of exercise achieved a reduction that was 0.46 percentage point greater compared to aerobic exercise (p=0.014) and 0.59 percentage point greater compared to resistance training (p=0.001). Changes in lipids, blood pressure, and abdominal fat distribution variables did not differ among groups.
