Several studies have reported an increase in adiponectin concentrations in subjects undergoing treatment with thiazolidinediones (TZD). Despite the well established relationship between TZD and adiponectin, no paper has systematically summarized the existing evidence about TZD and adiponectin. Riera-Guardia and Rothenbacher therefore performed a meta-analysis of 19 studies in order to systematically review and summarize current evidence on the effect of TZDs on adiponectin serum levels, taking special care to avoid publication bias. Their meta-analysis clearly revealed an increase in adiponectin serum levels after TZD administration, in the range of about 1 standard deviation higher compared to the control group. This effect also seemed to occur after short treatment duration. These results provide evidence that TZDs do increase adiponectin levels, an effect that has to be considered when exploring the cardiometabolic effects of this class of drugs.
