Serum uric acid is associated with microalbuminuria and subclinical atherosclerosis in men with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Description

Several large epidemiological studies have reported that serum uric acid concentration is associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study sought to evaluate the relationship between serum uric acid concentration and degree of urinary albumin excretion as well as markers of subclinical atherosclerosis, such as carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), plaque score, pulse wave velocity (PWV), and ankle-brachial index (ABI) in 343 men with type 2 diabetes. A positive correlation was found between serum uric acid concentration and log-transformed urinary albumin excretion. Multiple regression analysis also demonstrated that serum uric acid concentration as well as duration of diabetes, haemoglobin A1c, serum triglyceride levels, and systolic blood pressure were independent determinants of urinary albumin excretion. Serum uric acid concentration correlated positively with IMT and correlated inversely with ABI. In conclusion, the data indicates that serum uric acid concentration is associated with microalbuminuria and subclinical atherosclerosis in men with type 2 diabetes.
