This paper by Superko H.R. reviewed lipoprotein metabolism and detailed lipoprotein tests that have clinical utility. Also discussed in this review paper were apolipoprotein measurements that could replace standard LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol measurements and laboratory issues related to the different assessment techniques. Although Dr. Superko believes that advanced lipoprotein testing has clinical utility, the evidence is based on research laboratory quality tests and caution is advised as to the accuracy, reproducibility and precision of commercially available tests. Another review discussing current limitations to the widespread clinical application of advanced lipoprotein testing was provided by Dr. Mora in Controversies in Cardiovascular Medicine.
