The purpose of this paper was to identify risk factors for depression and anxiety in people with type 2 diabetes. The study cohort was derived from participants of the Edinburgh Type 2 Diabetes Study (n=1,066, aged 67.9±4.2 years). The authors found a positive association between abdominal obesity and depression but not anxiety. Cardiovascular disease measures were also related to depression only. On the other hand, cardiovascular risk factors were not related to either anxiety or depressive symptoms. Moreover, a positive relationship between lifetime history of severe hypoglycemia and symptoms of anxiety was observed. These results suggest that depression is associated with abdominal obesity and cardiovascular disease in people with type 2 diabetes.
