Description

The aim of this study was to examine the association between white and brown rice consumption with type 2 diabetes risk. For that purpose, data from three prospective cohort studies were combined to create a study cohort of 39,765 men and 157,463 women. The analysis revealed that regular consumption of white rice was associated with higher risk of type 2 diabetes, whereas brown rice intake was associated with lower risk. Moreover, the data indicated that replacing white rice with brown rice or other whole grains was associated with a lower risk. Therefore, these results emphasize the importance of educating the population to limit their consumption of refined grains and rather incorporate whole grains in order to prevent the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
