Ulf Smith

Ulf Smith, MD, PhD, FRCP is Professor of Internal Medicine and Director of the Lundberg Laboratory for Diabetes Research at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, Sweden. Previous positions include being Chair of the Institute of Medicine, Chief-of-Medicine and Dean of Research of the Sahlgrenska Academy. Professor Smith is a diabetologist and his research is focused on the pathogenesis of Type 2 diabetes and its complications. A major focus has been on the role of the adipose tissue in generating insulin resistance and the regulation of adipogenesis. He has published around 500 scientific papers in the field and received many honours for his work. Professor Smith is Past President of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes and of the European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes. He is also Past President of the Alliance for Biomedical Research in Europe.
