Description

Gallagher D, Kelley DE, Yim JE et al. Differences in body fat distribution between patients with type 2 diabetes (n=56 women and 37 men) and healthy controls (n=64 women and 29 men) were examined in an ancillary study group of the Look AHEAD trial. Areas of total, subcutaneous, intra-abdominal (visceral) and intermuscular adipose tissue were quantified by magnetic resonance imaging. Results of the study indicated that adipose tissue distribution was significantly different in subjects with type 2 diabetes. For instance, patients with type 2 diabetes were characterized by more intra-abdominal and intermuscular adipose tissue and less subcutaneous adipose tissue than healthy controls.
