Association of lifestyle factors with abdominal subcutaneous and visceral adiposity: the Framingham Heart Study.

Diabetes Care 2009;32:505-10

Molenaar EA, Massaro JM, Jacques PF et al.

Description

The cross-sectional associations between lifestyle factors and abdominal subcutaneous and intra-abdominal (visceral) adipose tissue were assessed in 2,926 Framingham Heart Study participants. Adherence to recommended dietary guidelines and physical activity were inversely related to subcutaneous and intra-abdominal adipose tissue accumulation. However, smoking and alcohol intake were differentially associated with intra-abdominal adipose tissue. Finally, an increasing number of healthy lifestyle factors were associated with lower subcutaneous and intra-abdominal adipose tissue.
