Description

The purpose of this study was to identify predictors to the incidence of hypertension in 625 untreated pre-hypertensive participants of the Strong Heart Study. Four-year incidence of hypertension was 38%. Development of hypertension in this population could be predicted by higher baseline systolic blood pressure, presence of diabetes, increased waist circumference and higher ventricular mass index with no significant effect of age, gender, haemoglobin A1c, homeostatic model assessment index, C-reactive protein, fibrinogen, LDL and HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, plasma creatinine or urine albumin:creatinine ratio. These results support the importance of risk stratification of pre-hypertensive patients, particularly for those with diabetes and/or with increased left ventricular mass and stroke volume for optimal treatment management.
