Description

This study compared the one year effects of two types of diet (low-carbohydrate vs. low-fat) on weight loss and glycemic control in 105 overweight patients with type 2 diabetes. After 12 months, the two groups showed an average 3.4% reduction in body weight although a more rapid weight loss was observed at the early stage with the low carbohydrate diet. This modest weight loss had no significant effect on HbA1c levels, blood pressure nor on plasma lipid concentrations except for the low-carbohydrate diet which induced an increase in HDL cholesterol after 6 months which was sustained at 12 month.
