The effect of short-term moderate alcohol intake of either low-concentrate ethanol solution, red wine and beer with or without alcohol on adiponectin levels was investigated in a randomized controlled crossover intervention trial (n=72 healthy individuals). Among women, adiponectin increased significantly after the consumption of red wine while in men it increased following intake of ethanol solution or alcoholized beer. Thus, alcohol-containing beverages appear to have a significant beneficial influence on adiponectin concentrations which differs between sexes and type of beverages.
