This study by Numao et al. investigated the influence of acute aerobic exercise on total and high-molecular-weight (HMW) adiponectin in 8 healthy untrained men. For that purpose, each participant performed two trials, the exercise trial and the control trial, separated by at least one week. The exercise trial consisted of 60-minute stationary cycle exercise (50% peak oxygen uptake) followed by 30-minute rest, whereas the control trial was 90-minute rest. Acute moderate intensity aerobic exercise was found not to affect either total or HMW adiponectin concentrations during exercise and postexercise. Serum free fatty acid and glycerol concentrations were higher and plasma insulin and glucose concentrations were lower in the exercise trial compared to the control trial. These results indicate that total and HMW adiponectin concentrations are not regulated by the change in hormones or metabolites during acute moderate-intensity aerobic exercise and postexercise in healthy young men.
