Finnish Diabetes Prevention Study Group. Prevention of type 2 diabetes mellitus by changes in lifestyle among subjects with impaired glucose tolerance.
The Finnish Diabetes Prevention Study evaluated the impact of a lifestyle modification program on type 2 diabetes risk in subjects with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) at baseline and who were followed for three years. IGT is important as it precedes type 2 diabetes. This landmark study demonstrated that a lifestyle intervention program featuring moderate weight loss could reduce type 2 diabetes risk by 58% in high-risk patients with IGT.
