Getting the message across: mechanisms of physiological cross talk by adipose tissue.

Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab 2009;296:E1210-29

Lee DE, Kehlenbrink S, Lee H, Hawkins M, Yudkin JS

Description

In this exhaustive review paper, Lee and colleagues examined the major putative mechanisms whereby adipose tissue is a key mediator of obesity-related organ cross-talk. Several hypotheses are presented and discussed such as the fatty acid hypothesis, the portal hypothesis, the endocrine hypothesis, the inflammatory hypothesis, the overflow hypothesis, the neural hypothesis as well as a novel vasocrine hypothesis.
