Description

In this study, the authors propose specific waist circumference (WC) cutoff values for the assessment of abdominal obesity in the Chinese population. A total of 381 men and women without diabetes from the Shanghai urban area were enrolled and 290 were followed up for 7.8 years. During this period, 63 participants developed type 2 diabetes. Anthropometry and intra-abdominal adipose tissue (magnetic resonance imaging) measurements were used to determine an intra-abdominal adipose tissue cutoff value of 90 cm2 cross-sectional area. The corresponding optimal WC values were 88 cm for men and 82 cm for women. It was proposed that reaching these cut-off values would reduce the incidence of type 2 diabetes in the Chinese population.
