Description

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of the metabolic syndrome on hs-C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in patients with and without a first acute coronary syndrome (ACS) event. The study group included 273 patients with a first ACS event and 261 controls. The present study showed that metabolic syndrome had a significant impact on hs-CRP elevation among patients with first ACS event. This finding was confirmed even when using different clinical criteria to identify the presence of the metabolic syndrome. These findings suggest that metabolic syndrome may predispose ACS patients to an exaggerated hs-CRP response during an ACS.
