Description

This study sought to compare two different support programs for increased physical activity through changed commuting habits. For that purpose, abdominally obese women (n=120) were randomly allocated to a moderate-intensity support program focusing primarily on cycling to and from work and secondly on walking to and from work or to a standard care low-intensity support program focusing on walking to and from work for 18 months. The intervention group was more likely to achieve treatment success for cycling than controls but no difference was observed between the two groups for walking. Commuting by car and public transportation were reduced similarly in both groups. Both groups achieved similar reductions in waist circumference with no change in body weight.
