This paper presents a case-control analysis of individuals with the metabolic syndrome who died of coronary heart disease (CHD) over a 18-year follow-up period and who were individually matched with individuals with the metabolic syndrome who did not die from CHD. In this interesting analysis, the investigators found that the number of HDL particles was an independent predictor of CHD death among men with features of the metabolic syndrome. Neither fasting insulin nor adiponectin were predictors of CHD death.
