The West of Scotland Coronary Prevention Study was a landmark trial that documented that lowering plasma cholesterol levels via statin therapy among hypercholesterolemic subjects could reduce the risk of death from coronary heart disease or non-fatal myocardial infarction. In this analysis, follow-up data was extended to about 10 additional years after completion of the trial. The findings clearly show that the initial five years of treatment with a statin (pravastatin) significantly reduced coronary events for an additional 10 years among hypercholesterolemic men who did not have a history of myocardial infarction.
