In this study, the investigators examined the metabolic syndrome’s contribution to incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD) over a follow-up period of about 10 years. This paper provides further evidence that the presence of the metabolic syndrome in type 2 diabetic patients without known CHD lowers the probability of remaining free of CHD over the study follow-up period. These findings support the view that clinical diagnosis of the metabolic syndrome is relevant, even among type 2 diabetic patients, as it can predict all cause mortality.
