Description

The fat mass and obesity associated (FTO) gene has recently been strongly tied to higher body weight and adiposity. This brief report by Wardle et al. sought to test the hypothesis that children carrying the FTO alleles have altered appetite. The analysis included 3,337 children from the United Kingdom aged 8-11 years. Results showed that individuals with two FTO A alleles had reduced Satiety Responsiveness Scores (p=0.008). Mediation analysis indicated that some of the observed association between FTO genotype and increased adiposity could be explained by effects of satiety responsiveness.
