Description

Metabolic syndrome prevalence, using modified NCEP-ATP III clinical criteria, was quantified in a sample of 223 consecutive patients (aged £45 years) with acute myocardial infarction who underwent primary percutaneous coronary intervention. Of the 223 patients, 72.2% (n=161) had all metabolic syndrome clinical criteria. Of these 161 patients, 47% had ≥3 metabolic syndrome clinical criteria. As expected, each criterion was significantly worse in patients with the metabolic syndrome compared to those without the metabolic syndrome. Moreover, the Framingham risk score was higher in patients with the metabolic syndrome. Finally, the proportion of smokers, male gender, and family history of premature coronary artery disease was similar in both groups.
