The relationship between weight changes and the consumption of liquid calories was examined in the PREMIER trial in 810 adults followed for 18 months. A reduction of 100 kcal/day of liquid calorie intake was associated with a weight loss of 0.25 kg at 6 months and 0.24 kg at 18 months. Only sugar-sweetened beverages were significantly associated with weight change. For instance, a reduction of 1 serving/day was associated with a weight loss of 0.49 kg at 6 months and 0.65 kg at 18 months. These results suggest that limiting the intake of liquid calories, particularly of sugar-sweetened beverages, can generate weight loss and stave off excess weight gain.
