Diabetes Care 2005;28:385-90

McNeill AM, Rosamond WD, Girman CJ et al.

Description

Individuals in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study who had the metabolic syndrome as classified by the U.S. National Cholesterol Education Adult Treatment Panel III guidelines were at increased risk of developing incident coronary heart disease or ischemic stroke. The metabolic syndrome components most strongly associated with incident coronary heart disease were elevated blood pressure and low HDL cholesterol level, and coronary heart disease risk increased with the number of metabolic syndrome components present.
