The positive association between uric acid and cardiovascular disease was discovered decades ago. This paper reviews the following relationships: 1- uric acid, the metabolic syndrome, and risk factors for atherosclerosis, 2- uric acid, endothelial dysfunction, and inflammation, 3- uric acid and subclinical coronary and carotid atherosclerosis, and 4- uric acid, gout, and cardiovascular events. The paper suggests that prospective studies will be needed to determine whether reduction of uric acid levels could eventually be considered a target to prevent cardiovascular disease.
