Canadian Diabetes Association 2011 Conference

Leading the fight against diabetes
Our mission is to lead the fight against diabetes by helping people with diabetes live healthy lives while working to find a cure.

Diabetes Canada advocates fiercely on behalf of Canadians living with and affected by diabetes.

With the support of committed volunteers, Diabetes Canada offers strategic direction, training and ongoing support to advocates across Canada. Diabetes advocates are a strong voice helping to influence positive change in health care, public policy and the future of diabetes in Canada.

There is little recognition of the difficult barriers caused by diabetes. Individuals face emotional and physical burdens and high financial costs which can affect quality of life and optimal disease management. Public coverage programs offer varied levels of financial support and unequal access to medications, devices and supplies. There are long waiting lists for diabetes education programs and support services. Discrimination is prevalent in areas such as employment and for kids living with diabetes at school. These are just a few examples of the critical issues diabetes advocates address every day and there is much work to be done.

An important part of Diabetes Canada’s advocacy work happens during provincial and federal election periods.

During provincial election campaigns we urge all parties running for public office to make diabetes a health priority.
