On January 1, 2021, Nature Reviews Endocrinology announced that their most accessed article of 2020 was the consensus paper resulting from the collaboration between the International Atherosclerosis Society (IAS) and the International Chair on Cardiometabolic Risk (ICCR). Several members of the ICCR are among the authors: Drs. Robert Ross, Benoit Arsenault, Jaap Seidell, Frank B. Hu, Bruce A. Griffin, Philip Barter, Yuji Matsuzawa and Jean-Pierre Després. Many collaborators of the Chair also contributed. The article entitled “Waist circumference as a vital sign in clinical practice: a Consensus Statement from the IAS and ICCR Working Group on Visceral Obesity” proposes that measuring waist circumference gives practitioners a great opportunity to improve the management and health of their patients. The authors provide recommendations and scientific updates regarding the measurement and the interpretation of waist circumference, a simple clinical tool that they consider as an important “vital sign” in clinical practice.
