The Chair will be hosting a symposium on Monday, September 1, during the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) meeting in Munich. The symposium, chaired by Drs. Jean-Pierre Bassand and Pekka Puska, will provide an opportunity to hear Drs. Steven M. Haffner, Ph. Gabriel Steg, Luis M. Ruilope and Jean-Pierre Després discuss the importance of targeting abdominal obesity and the metabolic syndrome to optimally manage global cardiovascular disease risk. Professor. Haffner will focus on the relevance of assessing the metabolic syndrome when evaluating cardiovascular disease risk, and Professor Steg will provide an interventional cardiologist’s perspective on abdominal obesity, the metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease risk. In addition, Professor Ruilope will review drug treatments for hypertension in relation to the metabolic syndrome. Professor Després will close the meeting by presenting evidence that weight loss is not the best indicator of the success in response to a lifestyle modification program aimed at reducing the cardiovascular disease risk of patients with abdominal obesity and the metabolic syndrome.
